Writer Hands is a Non–political and Non-profitable organization, registered with the Government of Pakistan. Since March 1996 it has been working in the field of social welfare. It is trying to create awareness in the people belonging to different coverts of life. Further it is trying to malice a welfare society. Writer Hands works with full zeal to address the different problems and to fulfill the basic needs of the people. NWFP an important region of Pakistan geographically, economically and politically is way behind other regions because of poverty, lack of education, lack of awareness and some old traditional and social setup. People are totally unaware of their basic rights. Govt negligence and their unmotivated attitudes are main obstacles in getting along with the rest of the world. So an inspiration was needed to give them a wakeup call, Writer Hands volunteered to be such an organization to bring light into the dark life of these people.

 

INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIZATION

 Writer Hands a welfare Organization comprising of poets, writers, journalist, lecturers, lawyers and students free of all kind of atrocities, discrimination, racism and political commitments. The main objective of this organization is to raise awareness regarding different social issues (Basic Rights, Facilities, Welfare and amenities to the people, including Drug Addicts, and in field of Basic Health / Education Facilities, Child Protection, Women Development, Sanitation, Water Supply, Environmental Protection and Fighting against Violation of Human Rights and terrorism) in the masses through print and electronic media, so that the issues highlighted can be comprehended by people from every walk of life as well as layman.

The human development indexes of Pakistan is only 0.497, which is below Nepal and Bangladesh. NWFP bordering Afghanistan is a particularly deprived province of Pakistan. The stress imposed on the province by over 3 million displaced afghan refuges has been significant on a city of only 4 million. Competition for resources and services has meant that vulnerable people have been deprived of their basic rights.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

 Awareness of human rights, identifying social problem and providing remedies, fighting against corruption, injustice, discrimination of all kinds, poverty, child labour and social evils and working for the improvement and better of society, bringing awareness for peace, democracy, equality, basic rights, environmental protection and especially moral values into the community and making them understand its importance. Promoting health, hygienic awareness along with basic education and skills among the children. Working for the rights of women and children and making them aware of their political and other rights, as they have an important role to play in the prosperity and growth of a healthy, educated and enlightened society. The Organization has its members at national as well as at international level. This is a social welfare organization neglecting and discouraging the social prejudice, sectarian, religious and territorial unnecessary social classification. Organization strive to make people vigilant and aware through print and electronic media, for this purpose the organization constantly publication its journals and news papers with different name with different areas in local language, national and international language. The aim of these publications is to aware people about the social issues and problems and there possible solution. In such a way the enable them to know their right and to teach modern way of life. The members belong to thinking community can express their concerns and exchange their views through website forum (Writer Club). Indication of different kinds of issues and their possible solution and suggestions can be put faith through this organization. More over the organization is informative in its nature. Different kinds of views, news and articles also came with in its ambit.

·        To concentrate on the problems of youth and provide them with opportunities of jobs and extra curricular activities.

·        To eradicate the ancient, backward, territorial customs and traditions and eradication of humanity based enemity like trends.

COMMUNITY AWAIRNESS PROGRAMME THROUGH MEDIA

 For the welfare and development of society, the role of media cannot be denied in this new era. It has been proved that media played a vital role in highlighting issues and problems in a society faced by community at every level and also the solutions to these problems on its behalf. In this century, as the whole world is now being called as a global village, it is media, which makes it possible to raise the voice of the people and make them hear at every nook and corner of the world. Writer Hands, on its behalf took this initiative to use media as a tool for raising awareness in the community regarding different issues and problems prevailing in the society. For this purpose Writer Hands arranged live theatre dramas and shows at different rural and urban areas of NWFP. Writer Hands is also using video and print media for highlighting the issues and raising awareness in the society. English Newspapers Daily “Writer Hands”, Urdu Newspaper Daily “Manzar-e-Aam” and Urdu Pushto magazines Monthly “Karah Mar” are being issued which are being distributed in the community espaicily NWFP. These initiatives taken by Writer Hands are having a very good impact on the people and Writer Hands is getting a good response.

CHILD/WOMEN RIGHTS AND PROTECTION PROGRAMME

Writer Hands established an institution named Child protection centre for the help and protection of home less and helpless children. Who are being reared and brought up educationally and morally. They are help to learn how to protect themselves from various diseases and social evils and how to spend good life as good citizens. Its objectives include carrying back the lost children and home deserters to their homes, promoting treatment to the addict and giving legal advice and medical aid to the needy and poor children. This institution not only gives informal education to the children but also prepare them in various basic skills necessary for honourable living so that they may not become a Burden on the society but prove a good skilful individual of the society. Writer Hands has established a Drop-In-centres namely “Aman drop in centre” for children and Muska drop in centre” for especially women with the financial and technical support of UNICEF Peshawar. Where Physiatrist and a group of Counsellors, health educators, and immobilizers provide them with Awareness from diseases, Social evils teach them about basic life skills and hygiene and also provide non-formal education so that they can prove an asset to the society. Writer Hands has established HELPLINE with technical and financial support of UNICEF Peshawar, which has a UAN number. For helpless and abandoned children and women who needs medical, legal or any other kind of help. This is a 24 hours service and Writer Hands team is always ready to reach them in time and help them out.

EDUCATION/SKILL/AWARENESS

 ·        Organized 12 seminars on political processes and role of elected representative   

with the help of, Election Commission. Participated by 360 male and 360 female.

·         Conducted seminars on child rights in convention on the rights of child (CRC) ith the help of National Commission on child rights (NCCR) participated by 60 elected representatives Nazims, activities and religious leaders.

·        Conducted 80 seminars during Dec 2005 to Mar 2006 on citizen empowerment with  focus on women vote registration role of elected representatives bridging the gaps including the excluded.

·        Free tuition canters (FTC) have been established for poor students.

·        Adult Literacy Centers (ALC) for adults Male and Female at different UCs NWFP.

·        Vocational training centers for women and children are providing skills to them.

 

 HUMAN RIGHTS

·        To fight against violation of human rights Writer Hands has established Law

Chamber in district and tehsil courts, which provide free legal aid to the helpless and poor community, especially children and women.

·        To understand community problems, Writer Hands has established a Complaint

Cell at District level where people submit their problems in written. Writer Hands act as a medium between them and the concerned authorities.

·        Writer Hands is working for promotion for human rights with special focus on

women and child rights.

·        Writer Hands worked with human rights project Pakistan (HR3P) funding by

Pluralism fund (TPF) USA, there are Two district level committees called human rights committees (HRCs) one of Male and another of Female, The member of the committees include district councillors, Tehsil councillors, Advocates, Teachers, Nazims, activists and volunteers.

HEALTH

 ·         Time to time, and in emergencies, Writer Hands has established Free Medical

Camps for poor and needy community.

·        Writer Hands has also conducted seminars/workshops for the betterment for the

community under the name of Struggle for Better Health.

COORDINATING PARTNERS

 Writer Hands is in complete coordination with other organizations. It is an active partner of District Coordination Councils and Tehsil Coordination Councils, Member Sarhad NGO’s ittihaad (SNI), Youth Force, Women awareness forum for advancement (WAFA), Coordination for Rural Development (CRD), Network for social Changing, Aids control federation Pakistan, Steering committee PCCWD NWFP and now it has also become a member of child protection network (CPN) at provincial level.

 Writer Hands has also established a Network through out in NWFP, for CCBs, CBOs, CSOs and NGOs by name of “Network for Social Change”, which in joint collaborations with these other partners provides Training and Technical Assistance and also coordinate and share relevant data with these organizations.

Child Protection and Empowerment of Adolescents

       In the year 2006, Writer Hands Organization is working in Mardan on with the technical and financial support of UNICEF. Which include 2 components

Achievements:

 a)     A thorough social mapping of urban has been done, which now is providing protective and social services to the vulnerable street children.

b)     A number of meetings have been arranged with the community of that area and considerable level of trust was gained by involving the community and the notables.

c)      A Drop In Centre by name of “Aman” established (UC Bijli Ghar) to provide social services to the street children.

d)     After having a number of meetings with the workshop owners, they were convinced to adjust a specific number of children at their workshops / restaurants

 Aman Drop in Centre

       Keeping in view the problems being faced by these children and adolescents a target of 300 affected children (150 boys & 150 girls) are provided with following services at these centres.

      A total number of 243 children were registered at Aman who are also been provided with counselling. 23 children were referred for free legal aid. A total number of 14 children were referred for free advanced medical care.

100 children took advantage of the bathing and washing facility available at the centre. 11 meetings were conducted with the parents (mother and father / guardians) of affected children having trouble at their homes or runway children who are being reunified. A total number of 09 children are put back at their homes. Total numbers of 05 children are reintegrated by either enrolling them at schools or putting them at work in the workshop / restaurant. 243 children were provided with health & hygiene education. 63 street living children were involved in healthy eating behaviour by involving them in preparing their own food at the centre. 03 children involved chronically in drugs were referred for the detoxification centre at DOST (Peshawar). 21 children with minor cuts and bruises were provided with first aid available at the centre.

LSBE

           1500 (750 boys and 750 girls) 1000 out of school adolescents 500 in-school

Children and Adolescents suffering from violence abuse and exploitation in 02 selected UC’s of Mardan have to collect correct information and life skills to protect from abuse, exploitation and HIV risks and drug used.

       04 trainers 02 female 02 male trained on LSBE. 02 Union councils (Mohib Banda & Chak Hoti) have been identified. 60 sessions (30 male and 30 female) have been conducted in selected UC’s empowering 1500 kids in LSBE. 600 peer educators have been identified.

An initiative of establishing a vocational centre has been taken in Aman (centre) where four sewing machines have been provided along with relevant material.

After having a number of meetings with the workshop owners, they were convinced to adjust a specific number of children at their workshops / restaurants.

Children of Aman (Centre) are also actively participating in theatre on topic of child sexual abuse in both district Mardan and Peshawar.

 

Aman Drop in Centre

 The total target for Aman was 750 (Boys & Girls) including Victims of Violence, Abuse, Exploitation, Trafficking, Runaway and HIV/AIDS for the year 2007.

        A total number of 780 children visited and 750 were registered at Aman who are also been provided with counselling. 82 children were referred for free legal aid. A total number of 436 children were referred for free advanced medical care.

         485 children took advantage of the bathing and washing facility available at the centre. 405 meetings were conducted with the parents (mother and father / guardians) of affected children having trouble at their homes or runway children who are being reunified. A total number of 37 children are put back at their homes.

Total numbers of 263 children are reintegrated by either enrolling them at schools or putting them at work in the workshop / restaurant. 750 children were provided with health & hygiene education and psychological counselling. 206 street living children were involved in healthy eating behaviour by involving them in preparing

Their own food at the centre. 14 children involved chronically in drugs were referred for rehabilitation at different referral detoxification centres. 546 children with minor cuts and bruises were provided with first aid available at the centre.

e)     A Drop in Centre by name of “Muska kor”, established (UC Bijli Ghar) now being strengthened this year to provide social services to the street children.

f)         A thorough social mapping  of 4 Union Council (urban ) has been done, which

       now is providing protective and social services to the vulnerable street children.

g)     A number of meetings have been arranged with the community of that area and considerable level of trust was gained by involving the community and the notables

h)      Similarly, another Drop in centre (Ranrha kor) was established at UC Muslim abad for Female.

i)        Ranrha kor specifically is providing services to Female sex workers who have been identified in the surrounding area along with other female suffering from violence, abuse and exploitation.

j)        An initiative of establishing a vocational centre has been taken in both centres where eight sewing machines have been provided along with relevant material.

k)      After having a number of meetings with the workshop owners, they were convinced to adjust a specific number of children at their workshops / restaurants

l)        With the technical support of education department a program by name literacy for all (LFA) has been introduce which is in its preliminary stages where thirty two children are being provided with basic education. In the next stage this programme is going to be made permanent by signing an MOU with the education department district Mardan

m)   A mapping exercise has been conducted an eleven selected UCs for the identification of vulnerable girls and boys, an addition to that meetings with the parents and the local community has also been conducted for the purpose.

n)      Social mobilization by female social mobilizer has also been in progress.

o)     Children of Muska Drop in Centre are also actively participating in theatre on topic of child sexual abuse in both district Mardan and Peshawar.

Keeping in view the problems being faced by these children and adolescents a target of 1500 affected children (750 boys & 750 girls) are provided with following services at these centres.

 

Over view of Muska kor Progress

                  The total target for Muska Kor was 750 (Boys & Girls) including Victims of Violence, Abuse, Exploitation, Trafficking, Runaway and HIV/AIDS for the year 2008.

Muska Kor

       A total number of 324 children were registered at Muska Kor who are also been provided with counselling. 13 children were referred for free legal aid. A total number of 20 children were referred for free advanced medical care.

A138 children took advantage of the bathing and washing facility available at the centre. 19 meetings were conducted with the parents (mother and father / guardians) of affected children having trouble at their homes or runway children who are being reunified. A total number of 23 children are put back at their homes. Total numbers of 17 children are reintegrated by either enrolling them at schools or putting them at work in the workshop / restaurant. 309 children were provided with health & hygiene education. 20 street children were provided with basic non formal education (LFA) in addition were also provided with life skill education. 25 street children were provided with neat cloths at the centre. 93 street living children were involved in healthy eating behaviour by involving them in preparing their own food at the centre. 11 children involved chronically in drugs were referred for the detoxification centre at Mardan. 135 children with minor cuts and bruises were provided with first aid available at the centre.

 Progress of Ranrha Kor

       Ranrha Kor is a centre specifically for women which are providing services to the female adolescents currently focusing on three Union Councils, which after a through mapping were identified as hugely populated with female sex workers. After establishing Ranrha Kor in March the following progress has been achieved.

A total number of 75 female visited the centre after extensive social mobilization by female social mobilizer at house hold and community. Among these 75, 52 females were identified as female sex workers after thorough counselling

Provision of health & hygiene education, safe sex methodologies is availed. 17 FSW’s suffering from STI’s was referred for medical aid. 01 case in need of shelter was referred to SWD. 06 cases were referred for free legal aid. 

19 years old FSW was reintegrated by arranging her marriage with her ascent, and now after doing follow up the case she is living happily and contends. 21 girls are receiving training of embroidery at vocational centre functioning at Ranrha Kor.    

07 sex agents were contacted. One case of reunification was also conducted.

 

PROGRESS OF HELPLINE

       A helpline functioning from September 2007 has been more strengthening in 2008 by increasing promotional activities and capacity building of staff members.

A total target 400 for the year 2008 boys and girls suffering from violence, abuse, exploitation, trafficking are to be provided with protective and referral services through helpline.

      In promotional activities 04 bill boards and 100 banners are installed at different localities in district Mardan highlighting the provision of services different programs on children issues are being broadcast on radio. 04 orientation sessions arranged at village and community levels, 02 seminars arrange with referral partners. A total number of 38 orientation sessions were conducted both in public and private schools (boys and girls).

      Toll free number installed and 04 v wireless sets are being provided to outreach workers so that those children who do not access to make a call can reach helpline

      From January to August 2008, 140 calls received through helpline UAN numbers and 18 walk in cases were also coated. 43 calls were made by female callers for different reasons including free legal aid, domestic issues, medical aid etc. 

      A total number of 34 calls were made by children to the helpline.  63 calls were made by male for different reasons of child issues. 10 drug addicts’ cases were referred to different referral partner for detoxification. 10 legal cases were handled (both male and female). 35 medical cases were has been referred through help line. Help line also received 02 CSW calls, which were referred to female DIC. 03 children who suffered from corporal punishment were handled by conducting meeting s with the concerned school authority follow ups are in progress. 03 children have been re admitted in school after receiving their calls. A total number of 34 counselling calls have been made through help line.

Special case 15 female students were admitted in PAK American College Mardan for two years free education by signing an MOU with the administration of Pak College.

      02 polio cases were identified at Saleem Khan and Mohib banda through Help line out reach team which were then notified to UNICEF and WHO.

 Progress of BSLS / LSBE

       1500 children and adolescents suffering from violence abuse and exploitation in 05 selected UC’s of Mardan have to collect correct information and life skills to protect from abuse, exploitation and HIV risks  and drug used.

       04 trainers 02 female 02 male trained on BSLS. 05 Union councils have been identified. 10 sessions have been conducted so far. 20 sessions (10 male and 10 female) have been conducted in selected UC’s empowering 500 kids in BSLS. 25 Facilitators are selected from these UC’s. 15 peer educators have been identified. 04 orientation meetings (02Male & 02Female) have been arranged with parents’ local leader and religious leaders in which 100 participants participated. 01 meeting have been arranged with employers to inform him about child rights and potential threat to work adolescents including HIV in which 25 participants participated. 

 

 CHILD PROTECTION EMERGENCY RESPONSE to IDPs N.W.F.P

 

Bajawar Crisis

 The prevailing conditions in Bajawar are worsening day by day due to operation that has been taking place against the militants by the government of Pakistan. In these conditions the people of the area are in grave danger and they are leaving their houses and mass migration is taking place to other districts of NWFP. Mardan is one of major 0area where they are taking refuge. A large number of female and children are being migrated to district Mardan. With the technical and financial support of UNICEF Peshawar, Writer Hands is working in Mardan and Lower Dir for the IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) of Bajawar. In the beginning Writer Hands team collected the data and established a data base to identify the Separated, Unaccompanied, Orphans and Missing Children.In response to the above mentioned Children Writer Hands provide their services in the following forms.

·        Installing of CFS (Child Friendly Space)

Four CFS Centres has been established two for girls and two for boys in Mardan Sheikh Yaseen Camp. While six CFS Centres has been established in Lower Dir.

In these friendly spaces:

·        Registration

·        Counselling

·        Life Skills Based Education

·        Recreation

·        Referral Services

·        Health and hygiene

Child Lost and Inform Centre:

·              In the lost and inform centre we collect and register the information about the lost and missing children to reunified with their parents.

In addition to the above mentioned children Writer Hands is also working for the scattered families in Mardan District to provide them relief with the support of Social Welfare Department and UNICEF.
